Gallbladder Surgery in Limassol
Gallbladder surgery (cholecystectomy) is the removal of the gallbladder. It is done mainly for symptomatic gallstones, for acute or chronic cholecystitis, and for some other conditions of the gallbladder. People can live normally without a gallbladder. I see patients at my clinics in Limassol and Nicosia and operate at the German Medical Institute in Limassol.
When surgery is needed
when gallstones cause pain (biliary colic) in the upper right abdomen, especially after meals
when there is, or has been, cholecystitis
when stones have caused complications such as pancreatitis or stones in the bile duct
when gallbladder polyps or other lesions need to be removed
Gallstones that cause no symptoms usually do not need an operation, and observation is discussed instead.
When to seek urgent care
Severe, persistent pain in the upper right abdomen, especially with fever or chills, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine and pale stools, or persistent vomiting needs prompt assessment. Call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department.
Assessment
Assessment includes a clinical examination, an abdominal ultrasound and blood tests, including liver and pancreas tests. When stones in the bile duct are suspected, additional imaging is added so that treatment can be planned.
The operation
Gallbladder removal is usually done laparoscopically, through small incisions with a camera. In some cases, for example severe inflammation or previous surgery, an open operation may be needed, or the operation may be converted during surgery for safety. The risks, including the rare injury to the bile ducts, are discussed with you before the operation. Many patients go home the same day or the next day.
Recovery
Most patients return to light activity within a few days and to work within one to two weeks, depending on their job and how the operation went. Heavy lifting is limited for a few weeks. After surgery there may be a temporary change in bowel habit or intolerance of fatty foods; this usually settles. You will be given written instructions.
