Hiatal Hernia and Reflux Surgery in Limassol

A hiatal hernia is the movement of part of the stomach up into the chest through the opening in the diaphragm that the oesophagus passes through. It often occurs together with gastro-oesophageal reflux (heartburn, regurgitation). Most patients are controlled with lifestyle changes and medication; in selected cases an operation is needed. I see patients at my clinics in Limassol and Nicosia and operate at the German Medical Institute in Limassol.

When surgery is considered

  • when reflux symptoms persist despite appropriate medication, or when a patient does not wish to take medication long term

  • when regurgitation (food or liquid coming back up into the mouth) is the main problem

  • when a large hiatal or paraoesophageal hernia causes symptoms such as pain, difficulty swallowing or anaemia

  • when there are complications such as oesophagitis or a stricture, after assessment

When to seek urgent care

Sudden severe pain in the chest or upper abdomen, persistent vomiting or inability to swallow even saliva, vomiting blood or black stools need prompt assessment. Call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Assessment

Assessment starts with your history and a clinical examination. It usually includes a gastroscopy and, depending on the case, a barium swallow, oesophageal manometry and pH monitoring. The findings determine whether surgery will help and which technique suits you. When endoscopic tests are needed, they are carried out in cooperation with colleagues who specialise in them.

The operation

The operation is usually performed laparoscopically. The hernia is returned to its normal position, the opening in the diaphragm is narrowed, and the top of the stomach is wrapped around the lower oesophagus (fundoplication) to strengthen the barrier against reflux. In large hernias, reinforcement of the repair may be used when judged necessary. The risks and expected results, such as difficulty swallowing or bloating in the early period, are discussed with you before the operation.

Recovery

The hospital stay is usually a few days. In the first weeks the diet progresses from liquids to soft foods and then to a normal diet, with small, frequent meals. Most patients return to desk work in about two weeks, while heavy lifting and strenuous exercise are limited for several weeks. You will be given written instructions and a follow-up appointment.
