Liver and Pancreatic Surgery in Limassol
Operations on the liver, pancreas and bile ducts are complex and are always carried out as part of a team, involving an oncologist, radiologist, pathologist, gastroenterologist and anaesthetist. They are mainly for tumours and cysts of these organs and for complications of pancreatitis. I see patients at my clinics in Limassol and Nicosia and operate at the German Medical Institute in Limassol.
Conditions treated
liver tumours: hepatocellular carcinoma, liver metastases (for example from colorectal cancer), cholangiocarcinoma and benign lesions that need treatment
pancreatic tumours: pancreatic cancer, neuroendocrine tumours and periampullary lesions
cysts of the pancreas and liver, including cystic neoplasms and hydatid cysts
strictures and tumours of the bile ducts and gallbladder
complications of pancreatitis, such as pseudocyst
When to see a surgeon
when a scan has shown a lesion in the liver, pancreas or bile ducts
when there is jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or skin), unexplained weight loss, or persistent pain in the upper abdomen or back
when you want a second opinion on a treatment plan you have been offered
Jaundice with fever and chills, severe persistent abdominal pain or bleeding needs urgent assessment. Call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department.
Assessment
Assessment includes a clinical examination, blood tests (including tumour markers where relevant) and imaging, usually a CT or MRI scan. In some cases an endoscopic ultrasound or a biopsy is needed, carried out by colleagues who specialise in these procedures. The findings are discussed in the team to decide whether an operation is appropriate, and whether other treatment should come before or after it.
The operations
Depending on the condition, the operation may be removal of part of the liver (hepatectomy), a Whipple procedure (pancreatoduodenectomy) for tumours of the head of the pancreas, removal of the body and tail of the pancreas (distal pancreatectomy), or drainage or removal of cysts. The approach, open or laparoscopic, is chosen case by case. The risks and expected results are discussed with you in detail before the operation.
After the operation
Hospital stay after a major liver or pancreatic operation is usually longer than a few days, with close monitoring. Eating and walking are restarted step by step, and recovery at home takes weeks. The pathology result determines whether further treatment is needed, which is planned with the oncologist. You will receive written instructions and regular follow-up.
