Hernia surgery in Limassol

A hernia is a bulge that appears where the abdominal wall has weakened and a piece of bowel or fat pushes through. It does not heal on its own, and when it causes discomfort or keeps growing, the treatment is an operation. I see patients with hernias at my clinics in Limassol and Nicosia, and operate at the German Medical Institute in Limassol.

Types of hernia

Inguinal and femoral (groin), umbilical and epigastric, incisional (at the site of an earlier scar) and recurrent hernias. Less common types, such as Spigelian, lumbar and obturator hernias, are assessed individually.

When to see a surgeon

  • when there is a lump in the groin, at the navel or over an old scar, especially if it is growing or painful

  • when the hernia limits work, exercise or lifting

  • when it has come back after a previous repair

If a hernia suddenly becomes painful and firm and cannot be pushed back, or is accompanied by vomiting and inability to pass wind, it needs urgent assessment. Call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Assessment

Diagnosis rests on the clinical examination. Where there is doubt, or for recurrent and incisional hernias, an ultrasound or CT scan is added so that the repair can be planned.

The operation

The defect is repaired by reinforcing the abdominal wall with a mesh. Depending on the type, size and patient, the operation is done by open or laparoscopic (keyhole) technique. The choice is made together with you and depends on what suits your case. Many repairs are completed on the same day or with one night in hospital.

Recovery

Most patients return to light activity within a few days. Heavy lifting is avoided for several weeks, depending on the operation. Recovery differs from person to person and by type of hernia, and you will receive written instructions.
